I am homeless or at risk of homelessness.  Am I eligible for help from CARIS Families?

We’re really sorry to say that CARIS Families is not an open-access service.  We take referrals from within five family temporary accommodation hostels in the London Boroughs of Camden and Hackney and are only able to register families already living in these buildings. 

‍

However, our Housing Rights Manager does provide housing advice at the open-access drop-in advice session at The Edge Youth Club in Manor House, Hackney.  These sessions are for anyone who lives in temporary accommodation in (or provided by) the Borough of Hackney.

The drop-in runs every second and fourth Monday of the month, and is a great place to get advice on housing, health, money, benefits and debt, as well as children’s and families’ activities in the borough. There is a play session available for children, and tea and coffee available.  To find out the date of the next session, please email us at office@carisfamilies.org or through our contact form.

If you are a professional who would like to refer to us, we are sorry, but we only take referrals through the hostels that we work in. If you are supporting a family in Hackney who would benefit from support, please encourage them to attend the drop-in session at The Edge Youth Club.

 

Where can I get help if I am not staying in one of the hostels CARIS Families operate in?

We are so sorry that we’re not able to support you directly. There are excellent alternative support services that may be able to help you with a wide range of issues which we have summarised below.  

Housing

Your local council

  • If you are homeless or threatened with homelessness, for example, if you have been threatened with eviction, are living in overcrowded or dangerous conditions, live in an unsuitable home, or you are at risk of violence in your home, the first thing you should do is contact your local authority and ask for help.
  • If you live in Hackney, you can contact Hackney’s housing options centre on 020 8356 2929.
  • If you live in Camden, you can contact Camden’s housing options centre on 020 7974 5801.
  • If you live outside these areas, you can use this website to find out how to contact your local council for help- Help from your council if you’re homeless or at risk of homelessness - GOV.UK
  • If you are at risk of violence and need immediate help, call the police on 999.  

 Shelter – The housing and homelessness charity

  • Shelter can provide one-off telephone advice on most housing issues. They can also provide direct case-work support in some circumstances.  They can help with issues like eviction and disrepair. They can particularly help in cases where a council or landlord is not fulfilling their legal obligations.  They can assist with most housing issues including legal challenges to council decisions, defences to possession proceedings, and escalating disrepair problems.

Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB)

  • CAB can provide advice and advocacy on a wide range of housing issues over the phone and in person. They can also provide advice on welfare benefits, council tax, debt and money management.
  •  If you live in Hackney, you can call 020 3880 2023 to speak to Hackney CAB. They do have an in-person service, but this is by appointment only, which can be arranged over the phone. The in-person service is currently based at 1 Hillman Street, London, E8 1DY, Wednesday or Friday from 9:30am.
  •  If you live in Camden, you can call the CAB advice line on 0800 028 3146 or request a callback using their webform- Request A Callback - Citizens Advice Camden

 Find a solicitor

You may be able to access help directly through a solicitor for some housing issues. If you claim Universal Credit (UC) you may be able to get free legal advice through Legal Aid on the following:

  • Disrepair
  • Eviction
  • Reviews of decisions made by the council
  • Suitability reviews if your temporary accommodation is unsuitable

Money and debt

Your Local Council

Most local councils have money and benefits advice services which you can access for free.   

If you live in Hackney, you can contact the Here to Help Team who can provide support with benefits, council tax debt, food and fuel costs, rent arrears and applying for disability benefits. You can complete an online form to request help here: Get help through Hackney Here to Help | Hackney Council. If you are unable to complete the form yourself, you can phone on 020 8356 3111.

If you live in Camden,  you can contact the benefits advice team online here: Financial support and money advice - Camden Council, or by phone on 020 7974 4444 if you are unable to complete the webform.

Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB)

CAB can provide advice on money and debt over the phone and in person.

High quality debt advice services are easy to access online.  National Debt Line and StepChange are both good options if you are struggling with debt and need some support. Both services allow you to quickly access professional advice from a debt expert.

Immigration

Hackney Migrant Centre

Hackney Migrant Centre offers free advice on immigration and welfare to asylum seekers, refugees and other migrants in need.

They also have a community centre where they offer warm meals and activities. They can provide case work support on immigration and housing and do grant applications and health advocacy.

They are a self-referral only service. They can only help 40 people per week and operate on a first come first served basis.

Praxis

Praxis runs a free immigration advice drop-in service for Tower Hamlets and Hackney residents who are on a very low income or are destitute. They also run a telephone advice service. Please call 020 7749 7605 to ask about telephone advice or their next drop-in session. Their phone lines are open on: 

Wednesdays 2-5pm and

Thursdays 10am-1pm.

 

Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB)

CAB can also provide immigration advice. To find your local CAB, head to Find your local Citizens Advice - Citizens Advice

They can help with applying to the EU settlement scheme, problems with leave to remain permits, getting replacement documents, and understanding your rights in the UK.

 

 

Food

You can find your local foodbank here. If you need to use a foodbank, you normally need to be referred by a professional such as a social worker, support worker, or children’s centre worker.

 

Play and activities for under 5s

You can find out about free activities in your area for under 5s through your local Children’s Centre.  Please see below, or search online for Children’s Centres in your local area if you’re not based in Camden or Hackney.
